Research Paper Revision

We got a lot of useful feedback from our instructor's advises sheet and our peer assistant activity. With those helps, I know exactly what I should do before I started to revise my paper. The commends on my paper are very brief, but enough. For example, the instructor said that I should elaborate more on my argument, and the "what, how, why" flows after the first argument are good. So that I know that the first argument is the one which I should focus on. After expand the argument and re-allocate the sentences, the logic flow of my first argument works much better, and the evidences are more powerful to support my argument. Also, I elaborated many of my other arguments.

Despite the helps that I mentioned above, another helpful activity is the counter argument writing activity. My rebuttal toward the counter argument in my draft paper is not clear and not strong. The brainstorm contained in the counter argument writing activity made up my mind and make everything clear for me to re-write my counter argument. I didn't change much of my words of my counter argument in my final paper; I just changed some languages to make my opinion more straight forward, and slightly changed the order of the sentences. With those small changes, my rebuttal seems much more powerful.

The last thing is that I didn't give any recommendations to my readers in the first draft. I stated some advised for the readers in my conclusion paragraph in my final paper to write a full period mark.

Research Paper Draft Writing

With a clear outline, writing a paper becomes easy. Since I concluded all the quoted sources and logic flow in the outline, the time cost for the first draft is nearly equal to the time cost for the outline. I just simply followed every step of the outline and added some details. A thing that spent a long time is to look for more detailed evidences to efficiently support my arguments. After those powerful evidences are found, my job is to analysis them, connect them to my argument, and write some of my own ideas based on those evidences.

What I learned from the writing process is that I practiced my critical thinking skills, and my logic organizing skills.

Generally speaking, the draft writing is not hard.

reflective post for Midterm Research

In the midterm research assignment, I have recalled my knowledge about academic research skills and APA format citing, which I have done before in my previous writing courses in SFU.
What I have improved is that I used to use a few databases to do my research, but now I can use multiple databases to search my sources. Also, I used to do my searches among only published product, whereas I searched among different forms of sources during my midterm assignment(including videos and images). And by answering those questions, I also summarized the advantages and disadvantages about each researching method.
One most critical thing is that I have got amazing sources in different formats about my final research papers. That brings me to a good starting point of my final paper.

reflective post for Reflective Paper

The most important thing that I have learned from the reflective paper is how to summarize my personal performance and how to get improved by going through those summaries. The challenge things for me to write the reflective paper is to recall all the knowledge I have learned from the first five weeks, and to recall my performance during classes and group activities.
Also, during writing that paper, I have learned how to connect artifacts with my writing, and how to get further experiences and knowledge from those artifacts.

Argument Developing

My main argument in the writing about 12 Angry Men is: To be a skilled listener is really important in communication; the two main listening skills are mindfulness and listen without judgement.

The process of develope the argument above is not straight forward. When I was watching the movie, I found that there are too many amazing views in the movie that we can learn about. However, we have only 1-1.5 page to write about the argument. It is really hard to determain which point to use. So I decided to go throught the text reading first. When I was reading the text book, some ideas about the argument become more and more clear. When I read the part about listening, the principle of mindfulness really shocked me. That was the first time for me to recognize how important the skill of listening is, and how I lack the skills. For my own experience, I recalled many moments that I was being a bad listener, those moments that I brought my own emotions and own views into the listening process. Apparently, those conversations were all end up with conflict.

Connecting with the movie 12 Angry Men, which has very good examples (examples about the misevaluation of the evidences due to being bad listeners) to support the idea about being a skillful listener. I determained the argument.

Opening! My current communication style.

Hi everyone!

Today's topic is communication style; mine especially.

First, I'm going to talk about my oral communication style. As a feeler who always cares about other's feeling, my overall style is to find out people's thought first, and then continue our dialogues. In other words, I always ask for feedback first, and then to get into deeper conversation.

Without doubt, the way above is a really general concept about my communication style. There are details parts. For example, I will keep showing respect during my communications. One of the ways to show respect is to look into others eyes both during your turn to talk and the other's turn to talk. Another way to show respect is to give your partner feedback, a gesture or an appropriate interruption can both be a good feedback. It is like a circle, give others feedback and gain feedback by ourselves.

Other than show respect, I also express myself well during communication. If time allows, I will talk about everything I know about my topic. It can give people more information about the topic, and helps them think more about the topic, so that we can gain more benefit from our conversation.

For about writing communication, my style is trending to academic writing now. I will give a detail introduction about my writing, to lead the reader get a overall idea about what I will write about. Then, for the body of my writing, I will use sentences which connect each paragraph; it can lead the reader to read fluently. In each body paragraph, I usually state my view clearly, and provide examples to support my view. Through the way above, I can persuade people efficiently.

In conclusion, my oral communication style make people respect me, care about my thought, and both sides of the conversations can learn a lot through our conversations. I have a number of friends who like to talk with me or discuss many topics with me. Additionally, my writing could give the readers better understanding of my purpose, and they are not only about writing, they are about communication as well.
